Living in high-rise apartments and gated societies is today's reality — but traditional Vastu Shastra was designed for standalone homes, where you could design the entire floor plan yourself. In a pre-built flat, following every Vastu rule isn't always possible, which is why small mistakes are extremely common.
Here are the 5 most common Vastu mistakes seen in apartments — along with practical, easy remedies for each.
1. A Poorly Aligned Main Entrance
In many buildings, a flat's entrance faces a single fixed direction — one that often has nothing to do with your preference. If the entrance faces South or South-West (generally considered less favourable), it can affect the entire flow of energy.
Remedy: Keep the main door clean and well-lit, and you can place an auspicious symbol like "Om" or a swastik above it. Never leave clutter or unused items at the threshold — the entrance should always stay open and clutter-free.
2. Toilet In The North-East
This is the most common apartment problem — builders often stack the toilets of every floor in one corner for plumbing convenience, and that corner sometimes ends up being the North-East (Ishaan). Since North-East is considered the most auspicious direction, a toilet here isn't ideal.
Remedy: Always keep the toilet seat lid closed, use an exhaust fan, and placing a bowl of sea salt in that area is a traditional practice believed to absorb negative energy.
3. Wrong Placement Of Kitchen And Bedroom
In smaller apartments, the kitchen and bedroom are often adjacent, and sometimes directly opposite each other. Ideally, the kitchen should be in the South-East and the master bedroom in the South-West — but this layout is rare in apartments.
Remedy: If you can't change the layout, face East while cooking, and avoid placing large mirrors directly facing the bed.
4. Overhead Beams And Sloped Ceilings
Exposed beams and structural columns are quite common in modern architecture — Vastu considers these "negative pressure points," especially when they sit directly above a bed, study table or sofa.
Remedy: Move furniture out from directly under the beam if possible, or install a false ceiling to cover it.
5. Clutter And Excess Storage
Storage space is limited in smaller apartments, so people often use balconies, North corners, or passageways for storage. This blocks the flow of energy, whether it's the North-East or simply a walkway.
Remedy: Declutter regularly, and keep the North/North-East as open as possible. Store heavy items near the South or South-West wall instead.
A Practical Way To Fix All Of This
Looking at a complete floor plan Vastu grid — one that clearly maps every room's direction, the Brahmasthan and each zone — is the easiest way to spot these mistakes. Rather than guessing, checking your exact plan lets you apply targeted, effective remedies.
